Great start for the young Padres. Winning run
scored for the Cubs on a grounder to short.
Playing a couple of steps off the infield grass,
Tyler Katsma made a diving stop to his left to
field the ball. His throw home was JUST late as
the winning run scored.

Cubs highlights:
The first game of the season was won by the Cubs,
who fought off the Padres, beating them 4-3. Cubs
pitchers were: Josh Schill-40; Gabe Wardin-39;
Brandon VanGalen-33.

Tavs - both go the distance
* Ryan throws a 71 pitch gem and Arik throws 87
pitches
* Grant Wehseler hits, what proves to be, the
game winning home run to put the Braves up 2-1
and the Braves tack on 2 more in the 4th to
secure the victory.

3b. Trevor Zonnefeld had a 2rbi double.
Tyler Katsma 65 pitches and Matt Gilgenbach 24

Cubs beat the Cardinals 4-3 in 8 innings. Jake
Murphy had the winning hit scoring Danny
Rodriguez. Gabe Wardin was the winning pitcher.
Josh Schill also pitched great and made some
amazing catches in the final inning to hold the
opposition!
(I don't have the exact pitch counts, but our
team doesn't play again this week so it doesn't
really matter. Craig probably will have the
counts.)

The Rays batted through the line-up three times
in two innings and had everyone get at least one
hit. Bryce Buchholz highlighted the hitting
birage with 2 HR's (including a grand slam) along
with Isaac Loomans taking one long over the
left-center field fence.

The Cards were lead by Cody Kamphuis, Nolan
Unser, Keegan Krohn, Andrew Greenfield, and Erik
Riddell (HR) who each had 2 hits. Erik Riddell
pitch 5 innings (79 pitches) for the win. Nolan
Unser (18 pitches) pitched the sixth. Kody Pinch
(23), Colton Hawkinson (16), and Bryce V. (73)
pitched for the Padres.

There are no more undefeated teams, now. Arik
Tavs goes 5 innings and gives up one hit, but the
Braves make it interesting ; they score 5 in the
bottom of the 6th. The Rays' Cody Mitchell hits a
home-run on his birthday to lead the highlights.

Drew Hraban and Ike Loomans combine, on the
mound, to get the victory for the Rays. Brady
Huenink leads the hit parade with two doubles and
his first, career, home-run. Cody Zonnefeld goes
long for the Cards.

A pitcher's dual between Noodle Tavs and Josh
Schill left both teams scoreless after 5 innings.
Noodle's perfect game was spoiled by Chase
Harmsen as he went 6 1/3 innings (85 pitches)
allowing one unearned run. Josh Schill left the
5th after his 85 pitches came up.
Brandon Van Galen came in the 6th and earned the
victory as he pitched three innings. He also
ended the game on a single up the middle in the
bottom of the 8th.

Tyler Katsma and Matt Gilgenbach combined to hold
the Rays in check and strand many runners 60 feet
away from home. Even though the Rays' Drew Hraban
hit his first HR, in the sixth, it wasn't enough
as the Padres enjoy their first victory of the
season

help the Rays secure the 2nd seed in the
playoffs, next week. His two-run shot comes in
the top of the 5th to put the Rays up 7-6 and the
Rays add one more on a Charlie Husnick double.
