ALL COACHES SHOULD DOUBLE CHECK THEIR TEAM SCHEDULE FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR TO ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE BEEN COMMUNICATED ALL GAME CHANGES AND PRATICE CANCELLATIONS!

Dear Youth Basketball Coaches and Parents,

As you are well aware, the 2010 Youth Recreation Basketball season has been filled with cancellation after cancellation due to the inclement weather and school closings. To start the season, our Department scheduled over 3,000 practices and 600 games for your youth basketball teams. Due to the weather and the rescheduling of school affected events, we have had to cancel or reschedule over 900 practices and 375 games! Several of your younger aged teams last played or practiced the week of January 25th!

Though we have not seen fresh snow in a week, the snow continues to affect our youth basketball program. The spring sports season, which for area High and Middle Schools was to begin on February 22nd, has been moved indoors as the baseball, softball, and soccer fields will not be playable until at least March 1st. This circumstance has required another mass reschedule of roughly 100 games and practices.

Even with all of these reschedules, including the upcoming ones from Spring Sports moves, the Department has been able to reschedule ALL lost games. To make this possible however, we have had to schedule in ways our Department typically does not like to do. These scheduling tactics included asking teams to play back to back games, play three games in a week, play on Friday and Sunday evenings, play home games outside of your area, and start games as late 8:30pm and even 9:00 pm in our senior (Age 16-18) league! Please understand that these tactics were done only as a last resort as there was little or no other option available to us.

By having to push so many games into late February and early March and the school spring sports season being moved indoors, there is limited to no available gym time in some areas for the remainder of the season. Unfortunately this means that if we lose any additional games, which is a possibility with the expected storm on Monday, we may not be able to reschedule all games prior to the original end date of the season (3/7) or your rescheduled game might be in another location. An example would be Hidden Valley playing Cave Spring at Glenvar Middle School.

Our last resort, after extending the season and playing games outside of your area will be canceling games and not rescheduling them. Our Department can only recall doing this once in the past 20 years however this year has been unlike any other.

Please know that we will do everything in our power to ensure that the season gets in!

Good luck the rest of the season,

Athletics Staff
