Thurs. 5/11 - D'Ville,TX.: New Word: hubris. A noun from the Greek word hybris: exaggerated pride or self confidence. The adjective form of the word is hubristic.

Perhaps Diablo coaches and players were overly hubristic for this day's battle versus the 'fightin' Rangers. Lookeehere now. Here come the Diablos, fresh off of two victories in row, now playing at a .500 clip for the season, now tied for !st place in our Division. In the other dugout: The Rangers. We stomped 'em the first time and they had not won a game all year. No fear on our side; we'd whip 'em again for good measure.

But the ump cries out "Play Ball" and we have to beat them for real. Bad Start. 8 walks and 5 runs later, we're down. Diablos come back. With 2 outs, the rally starts and we put up 5 of our own on a couple of errors, Tony's walk and Brandon's base hit. 5-5 at the end of 1.

Matthew I. takes the hill and though he strikes out 2, a walk, an error and two base hits give the Rangers 4 more. After Therman gets on, Cameron slams a hard one to center to put the Ranger center fielder on the d.l. Two walks and two errors later, Jesse slaps a base hit and we've got 5 more on the board to take a 10-9 lead.

Jesse is on the mound for the 3rd, strikes out the first two Ranger hitters but an error leads to the tying run coming across the plate. Bottom 3 and we have runners on 2nd and 3rd; no outs. Two quick K's and a ground out and we leave 'em stranded. 10-10 with the Rangers coming up.

Jesse still on the hill. A walk and a grounder put two on. On a pitch that should have gone behind the batter- the ball hits the bat and rolls fair, bases loaded. Jesse then strikes out 2, but the wheels fall off. Walks and errors lead to 4 Ranger runs and they take a 14-10 lead. Can we come back? A leadoff K, and Cameron slams another to center, scoring as the ball is thrown around. 14-11. Two more K's and it's all over for the Diablos.

Maybe we played down to the competition or maybe we just underestimated the Rangers. Whatever- the Rangers now have a 'W' and the Diablos are left needing a big Win on Tues. for a .500 season. See ya at the Ballyard.

5/5/06 9:42:14 PM

Thurs. 5/4- Cedar Hill: Another dark night in Cedar City,, storm clouds to the south and the umpires are already talking about lightning warnings. Diablos want to play and quickly jump on the Yankees starting pitcher for 5 runs. Justin walks, Jesse is hit by the pitcher and Cameron slaps a shot to short to score one. Brandon takes another shot from the pitcher, Matt I. and Therman and then Rocky take walks; Michael gets a base hit and the 5 are on the board. 4 Yanks draw walks and score in their half of the inning.

Top two and the Diablos strike again. Tony walks and Matt N. is on on an error. Drew walks, then Justin and Nick to load 'em up for Jesse's slam to the wall in left center to clear the bases; 5 more on the board. Yanks come back and put up 5 on 2 errors and too many walks.

Diablos put three more up in the third after Cameron leads off with a shot to right and races around the bags for an inside-the-park home run. Matt and Jesse are sharing the mound in the Yanks 3rd and only give up 2. 13-11, we're up- but not by much.

We can only put up 1 more run in the 4th and suddenly our 3 run lead does not look too good. Yanks are smellin' a W but the leadoff hitter pops right back to Jesse on the hill; one out. Ouch, and two quick errors score a run and the Yanks have a runner at third. Jesse gets a K for out #2 but walks the next one. For some unknown reason, with the tying runs on the base, the Yanks coach sends a runner from third on a passed ball but Cameron scoops it up and slaps the tag on him for the third out. Diablos have now won two in a row. Longest winning streak of the season and evens our record at 5-5. See ya at the ballyard in Duncanville next Tuesday nite.

4/30/06 12:22:31 PM

Sat. 4/29 - Harrington Park: After the storms had passed it was a sunny afternoon for the Diablos meeting with the Rough Rides and the mitey Diablos really made a game of it.

Michael got the start and the Rough Riders roughed him up for 5 quick runs because of walks and errors. In the bottom of the first, Nick and Cameron get on and both score on passed balls by the catcher so we're only down by 3.

Matthew I. takes the hill for the 2nd and it's 3 up and 2 down for the Ruff guys, all on K's. We get a zip for our efforts; still down 3.

Out trots Matthew again and even though he puts up two more K's, Ruff guys slip 2 more runs across on a couple of errors. We get a bunch of guys on base in our half of the third but only Rocky can score making it 3-7.

Jesse's turn on the hill for the 4th and three batters and 3 K's later we get to bat again. Again, Diablos put alot of runners on but we can only get 2 more runs as we leave the bases loaded. 5-7, but we still have a chance.

Jesse again on the mound but errors kill and Ruff Riders put 2 more on the board to take a seemingly insurmountable 9-5 lead. Coaches Rene and Mario have a motivational seminar before we bat; maybe that will help. Darryl leads off with a K and alertly races to first on a dropped third strike. Drew draws a walk and now we have two on the bases. With one out Matty I. takes walk and the bases are loaded. Justin steps up with 2 outs and slaps a hard one to score Darryl. Cameron draws a walk and Drew comes across making it 7-9 with the bases still loaded. Jesse can't find a good pitch, walks and Matt comes across; 8-9. 2 out, bases loaded and up steps Michael with all the pressure and weight of the game on his shoulders. Michael proves he's up to the task, strokes a shot to short- Justin races across the plate to knot the score and Cameron keeps on running while the Ruff Riders throw the ball, crossing the plate to make it 10-9 Diablos. Diablos Win, Diablos Win.

This was a good W for the Diablos because it proved a couple ot things. Some guys learned that they could hit; all learned that you never quit. Just for the record- this ole geezer coach has seen alot of W's but this one has to be in the top 10 for satisfaction. See ya at the ball yard in Cedar City on Thursday nite.

4/28/06 12:11:32 PM

Thurs. 4/27- Cedar Hill: Another good night for baseball as the Diablos line up against the dreaded Cedar Hill Reds. While Justin and Jesse lead off the ball with walks, Michael and Brandon hit safely and we put two up on the board. Michael takes the mound for the Diablos and holds the Reds to 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning.

Top 2 and Anthony takes a walk, slips around to third and crosses the plate on a passed ball for our only tally. The big lefty, Justin, takes the hill and while he posts his first K and gets a good comebacker, we still struggle with walks and the Reds post 5.

In our top of the third, Justin and Jesse are issued walks and they run around the bases to score on passed balls but that's all we can muster. Down 5-7 with the Reds coming to the plate. Ole Jesse, our 'ironman' closer, struggles to find the plate and 6 batters, and one basehit later the Reds have put up another 5.

Top 4 and the Diablos are looking to make some kind of game of it. Reds pitcher can't find the plate and 5 walks later, Rocky, Cameron, and Matthew I. cross the plate and we top it off to get our 5 as both 'Lightnin' Lozano and Darryl come sliding across the plate.

5 is good but that gives us 10 and with five minutes remaining and the Reds coming up the game is called.

Some good efforts were made by the Diablos, especially Justin's improved work on the mound, and Cameron made a couple of nice plays at first. Looking for more improvement, we'll see ya Saturday; back home at Harrington for a 1PM battle with the Rough Riders. Players get there at noon and we'll have some BP.

4/26/06 2:08:58 PM

Tues. 4/25 - Harrington Park: Under dark skies with the temperature sinking like the Titanic, the mitey Diablos begin the 2nd half of the season taking on the salty Sidewinders of Cedar City.

Matthew I takes the hill for the Diablos and only gives up 2 runs in two good innings of work; it should have been a goose egg, except for errors.

Therman slaps a base hit up the middle to score Anthony from third and we get 2 in the first frame. In the second, Brandon strokes a base hit to right and we end up with 4 more on the boards- thanks to a bunch of walks.

Jesse takes the hill for the third inning and though he K's three of the Cedar Choppers, errors lead to two more runs. We get zip in the third and head for the fourth with a 6-4 lead.

Top 4 and the Diablos look like a chinese fire brigade. A walk, 2 hits and 5 errors later and they put up 5 to take a commanding 9-6 lead. But, the fat lady hasn't sung yet.

Coaches are holding pep talk meetings; telling the boys that they can still win it. 'Don't get down' they say and the Diablos seem to be all ears. With one out, Brandon takes a walk and steals second. Michael slaps a grounder and though Brandon moves to third, Michael is out at 1st; 2 outs. The fat lady is warming up her voice. 'We ain't done yet', cry the Diablos. Nick takes a walk and Jesse is hit by a pitch to load 'em up to set the stage.

Before we come to the exciting conclusion- here's some more Baseball 101 from the OFFICIAL RULES of Major League Baseball:

Rule 4.09 How A Team Scores

a) One run shall be scored each time a runner legally advances to and touches first, second, third and home base before three men are put out to end the inning. End Quote.

So here we are, down 6-9, bases loaded, 2 outs and up comes Rocky. Sidewinder's pitcher can't find the plate, Rocky walks forcing in Brandon; score now 7-9. Anthony takes a walk forcing in Nick to make in 8-9 and third base coach Lozano is thinking up a way to get Jesse in to tie the game. Therman steps up to the plate gets a 1-1 count and the next pitch goes wild and the stands go wild as well as Jesse races across home to make it 9-9. But wait: that's not all. Rocky races from 2nd to third on the wild pitch with Anthony tailing behind, going from 1st to 2nd. Catcher finds the ball and fires to third trying to get Rocky but the ball is off the mark and Rocky races across the plate to make it 10-9 Diablos. But wait- there's more. With the score 10-9 Anthony is pounding his way to third and a throw from the outfield gets him out. Ump sez Rocky's score does not count because the third out was made during the play. Harrumph! sez the old geezer coach, 'how can that be?' Although the ump admits that Rocky scores before the third out is made he sticks to his guns and calls it a tie. The old geezer coach, not wanting to argue, goes thru the handshake line and then seeks out his trusty rule book. The young umpire, after reading section 4.09 (a) agrees that the run did score and Diablos win 10-9. End of story. See ya Thursday nite in Cedar City.

4/18/06 5:42:56 PM

Thurs. 4/13- Cedar City: Ouch!! Under the auspices of what my Mama told me: "If you can't say something good- don't say anything" , we will only say this: Cedar Choppers 10, Diablos 1. End of Story.

In other news- Due to the importance of the TAKS, TOOTS, TAAS or TRASH testing, which guarantees that 'no child will be left behind'; games and practices are hereby cancelled until Sat. 4/22 at 10 a.m. up on the hill. See ya at practice then.

4/12/06 11:04:20 AM

Wed. 4/12/06- The Office: In the aftermath of yesterday's excitement and baseball news, a couple of items:

Those of you who attended the First Team Meeting will recall my pleas for all of the parent support that we could get for this team of young men. Darryl's mom promptly volunteered for one project, Carmen took care of getting the raffle tickets out. We even had an uncle show up to teach scorebook keeping 101 and thanks to Tio Rodney for that. As you watch the next game, take a look at the coaching staff. With Rene, Mario, Jaime, David and John out there, this geezer has little to do in the way of coaching and we should all give thanks for their time. FYI, Jesse's dad, John Tranel has been hospitalized for the past couple of days and in visiting with him this morning- it looks like he will be paroled today and on the mend. Keep John in your thoughts and prayers.

Second item: Last night after the game I gave the boys another team rule: No more game boy, xbox, playstation or other video games until our season is over. I am convinced that any time these fellers have for this activity would be better spent outside playing catch or hitting balls off a tee. If you agree, will you help the team out on this? Read on for yesterday's game. c00p

4/12/06 10:47:06 AM

Tue. 4/11/06-Harrington Field: If you've heard the old sports adage that "We snatched a Victory from the jaws of Defeat", you will understand when I tell you that the young Diablos literally 'snatched a defeat from the jaws of victory'. I know- other than at the completion of our first at bat, we never lead in this game. But- we had every chance to win and were unable to capitalize.

After Jesse and Michael get base hits, Cameron strokes another and scores on a passed ball; Diablos up 3-0. Justin finally gets his first start on the hill and although he had a tough outing, we both agreed that it was a start and that he would learn from it. Matthew Eye comes in but the Angels put a 5 on the board to take the lead forever.

In the second inning Brandon takes a walk, moves around to third and scores when Matthew N. slaps one to the left side but that's all we get. Matthew comes back out for the bottom of the inning and should have been out of the inning but 2 dropped third strikes, a couple of walks and a throwing error lead to two more Angel scores. Jesse comes on to get a K to end the inning but we're down 4-7.

Top of the third and though the Diablos load the bases with 1 out it's two K's and we get nothing. Jesse gives up a lone walk which scores on a passed ball, strikes out three in a row and now we're down 4-8.

Top 4 and here's another chance. Diablos load the bases but the K's kill us and we get zip. Jesse then strikes out the side and though we're still down, we have one last opportunity to 'snatch a victory'.

Nick leads off with a walk and scores when Michael hit a sharp grounder to short and was safe at first on a bad throw. Michael moves around and scores on a passed ball but that's all we can muster. Diablos take a 6-8 loss.

Diablos are learning and getting better. We had 3 legitimate base hits and others are learning to hit the baseball; not just looking for a walk. A bit more hitting practice and we'll have 'em all smackin' the ball around.

A final note from the Geezer's philosophy of Baseball: We've all been to major league games and seen that some fans feel free to target anyone for heckling. Players, coaches, umpires, opposing pitchers, bat boys; nobody is immune. Major leaguers make millions and don't care what is said, for the most part and have learned to tune it out. However- 9 year old boys see it, feel it and react to it differently. While I fully support cheering and having a good time at the ball game, I think it totally counterproductive to jeer or razz or attempt to unnerve the opponent. For my money, it serves no purpose and has no place in youth athletics. That's my 2 cents; see ya Thursday nite in Cedar City.

4/8/06 6:06:53 PM

Sat. 4/8/06- Harrington Park: A sunny, windy day and we're back at home. Justin, scheduled for his first start on the hill, is a last minute scratch; down with 'throatitis'. (hey, I can't spell the one with laryng in it.) But, before we get to the game, how about a little class in Statistics 101.

Those of you that are looking at our web site might want to know what those letters stand for above the numbers. Let's take pitching today. 'G' = number of games pitched in. 'IP' = number of innings pitched. 'BF' = batters faced. 'B' = balls. 'S' = strikes. 'TP' = total pitches. 'PS1' (pitching statistic 1) = average number of pitches per inning. (this ole geezer sabermatrician opines that this is one of the most important pitching statistics in baseball. At 9 years old, we like to stay under 20. More than that and you can't go very far into the game.) 'H' = the number of hits allowed the opponent. 'R' = runs allowed. 'BB' = walks allowed. 'HB' = hit batsmen. 'SO' = strike outs. 'W', 'L' and 'S' (Win, Loss, Save). Here again, since I keep the book: To get a 'W', a pitcher needs to go at least 2 innings, or come in to close while we get enough runs to go ahead. Losses and Saves are fairly nebulous in our age group and I won't post 'em. 'WHIP' = walks and hits allowed per inning pitched. In the bigs, a guy at 1.5 or under is pretty good. Our goal is 2.5 or under. 'B.A.' = opponent's batting average. 'ERA' = earned run average. Forget that one until they are about 13 years old.

Okay, Okay; Statistics....... BORING.....let's get down to the game. So here come 11 of the Mitey Diablos to face of with the Royal Knights of Cedar Hill. We're the 'homeys' and take the field to get this ball rolling with Tony getting his first start on the bump. Their first two hitters hit the ball and a walk is on before Tony finds his groove. Although he plunked one , 2 quick K's and a tag at the plate by Michael and we come to bat down 0-3.

Diablos come back with a flourish when Cedar Chopper pitchers can't find the plate. Nick and Jesse take walks and Matt I. is safe on a fielders choice. Brandon and Tony walk and when Michael hits into another fielders choice we're up 4-3.

Out trots Matthew I. to take the hill. A grounder to Cameron at first and two quick K's and the Knight's get zip. Back come Los Diablos.

Therman leads off by getting on on a dropped third strike, Darrly takes a walk and so does Jesse. All three score on stolen bases and passed balls to make it 7-3 Diablos. It's Matty I back on the hill to make it two shutout innings in a row by adding two more K's to his totals and Cameron made a good play at the plate to punch out the guy stealing home.

Bottom 3 and back storm the Diablos. Brandon takes a walk and Rocky is on on another dropped third strike. Tony hits a slapper that is misplayed; Brandon scores- all hands safe. Up steps Michael, looking to do some damage. With a 3-1 count , Royals pitcher grooves a fast ball and BAM- to the left field wall she flies. While Rocky and Tony cross the plate, Royals outfielders play with the ball and here's Michael storming around the bases to score another making it 4 runs for the inning; 11-3 Diablos.

Out steps Jesse to the hill to put a nail in the Royal's coffin. The first batter is out on 3 strikes. Jesse is not sure whether he wants to walk a batter and takes the next 2 to 3-2 counts but is able to punch them out. 3 K's and the Ump cries 'Ball Game'. Diablos win, Diablos win.

Well, it's a good thing to get back in the Win column and even our record but we have a big one against the Super Duncanville Angels on Tuesday night. at 8:. Get there early if you want a seat and bring and grandparent. See ya at the ball yard.

4/7/06 10:53:02 AM

Thurs.4/6/06-Red Oak: Before we get into Los Diablos' struggle against the Rangers of Red Oak, a brief note on the statistics; for those who are looking. A batter who strikes out, but reaches base because the catcher dropped the ball is credited with an on base/error.; not a K. Oh, a "K", in the baseball vernacular is a strikeout. Also, a batter who hits a ball which is not cleanly played for an out - regardless if it bounces off the 2nd baseman's head, rolls to the fence and he ends up on third, is credited with and on base/error; not a triple.

So here we are, back in the cozy confines of the BallPark at Red Oak, aka Lindsey Park. At 7 minutes before game time, all 13 Diablos have finally arrived and the lineup is turned in. We're the visitors and up we step to the plate. Justin leads off with a walk and Jesse draws another. Cameron hits a shot to first, we've got two on the board but that's all we get before the Rangers come to bat.

Cameron gets hit first start on the mound and a sharp double to right center with the bases loaded puts three on the board for the Rangers. They get two more to make it 5-2 heading for the 2nd inning.

After Tony and Brandon draw walks, Matthew N. is safe at first on a dropped third strike. Up steps big Rocky Smith to drive one over the outstretched glove of the Rangers third baseman and after the smoke has cleared we have 3 more across the plate. A walk and a passed ball later, Rocky has scored and we are up 6-5.

Matthew Isaac takes the hill and four batters later Jesse gets the ball. The long and the short of the Rangers at bat was that 4 base on balls and 2 hit batsmen later they have a 9-6 lead.

Top three and we can only put one on the board when Jesse walks again and steals all bases. Jesse comes out and strikes out the side but walks kill us again even though the Rangers only get one run to make it 10-7; them. Don't know if you noticed but their third base coach called time out to counsel with each batter that inning.. League Rules specify that only one offensive time out per inning is allowed. I'm fairly certain that the ump and the Ranger's coach had overlooked that and surely were not trying to stall the game so that time would expire. I mentioned this to one of our coaches and he told me that the opposite side was saying that I was stalling. Trust me, folks, you don't stall for time when your team is behind.

Stall or not, up come the Diablos, Top Four, down 7-10, looking for a rally. Tony and Brandon get aboard on walks and Tony scores on a dropped 3rd strike and Rocky streaking for first. But, it's no soap as the Rangers pitcher chunks up a couple more K's and the fat lady sings aloud. Diablos lose 8-10 and looking for a comeback this Saturday; back home at Harrington.

Make note on your calendar that our game of 4/15 has been reschuled for Sat. 4/29 @ 3pm; same place, same opponent. See ya Saturday at the ballyard. Bring a cheerleader.

4/5/06 10:17:59 AM

Tue. 4/4/06-Red Oak: Due to missed directions and misdirection, all 13 Diablos finally found their way to Red Oak for a mighty tussle with the Vipers.

Diablos get the ball rolling with a 5 run burst in the 1st inning when, with one out, Jesse takes a walk and Cameron slaps a hard one to right, Matthew I. is safe on a grounder and Brandon gets aboard on a dropped third strike. Up comes Justin to get nailed by a pitch and with two on Big Nick strokes a single to score them both and that's 5 on the board.

Michael Charles gets his first start at pitcher and strikes out the side, but we go 1-2-3 in the top of the 2nd still leading 5-0.

The Vipers come back and get 5 in their half to tie the score and the Diablos go 1-2-3 in the top of the third.

Out of the bullpen comes Jesse to take the hill in the bottom of the third and since this ole geezer of a coach did not notice that we had a new catcher, the Vipers put 4 on the board to take a 9-5 lead.

Top 4 and the Mitey Diablos need a rally to stay in the game. Jesse slaps a single, Cameron is on on an error and with one out, Matt I. takes a walk. While Tony and Justin take walks, and Nick slaps another grounder, 3 have scored to make it 8-9. But, with the bases loaded, 2 more outs go in the books and the Diablos take a hickey from the Vipers; 8-9.

While the young Diablos still have lessons to learn, the bright side is that we did hit the ball well, hard and often on this night. Just not often enough. See ya Thursday nite in Red Oak. Again. Bring a friend.

5/8/05 1:08:36 PM

Welcome to the "Los Diablos" website. If you don't take this too seriously, you might enjoy our game stories and a look at t eam and individual statistic. We do not keep all statistics because some of them are hard to keep up with in a 9yr old league. Bear in mind that your ole geezer coach puts a lot more stock in a player's On Base Percentage than on his Batting Average. We may not even post a 'W' for a pitcher because sometimes these are hard to determine and really not that important at this age. Again, remember that our guys are only 9 years old and let's don't do a lot of comparison between players at this stage. Feel free to let me know if you see any glaring errors either in the stats or in the game stories themselves.

Sat. 4/1/06-Harrington Field: It's opening day at the Ballparks in Duncanville and thousands of excited players and fans braved the on again and off again showers for the festivities. Our Board of Directors gave mighty speeches, the first ball was thrown out - twice and all of the teams were introduced to the screaming throngs on the other side of the fence. A hearty rendition of The Star Spangled Banner was given a capella to finalize the ceremony.

Over on the Mustang field the ump cried out "Play Ball" and the games began. In the meantime, Los Diablos sped away to Mickey D's, home for a peanut butter and jelly or, in this case- home for a nap; all in preparation for our 5pm opener.

Here it is, 4:30 in the p.m. and all 13 members of the Mitey Diablos are on hand for our big game against the Duncanville Rangers. Umpires and coaches huddle, the Rangers are Home and take the field. Jesse takes a walk with one out and scores after stealing 2nd, 3rd and home and we're up 1-0.

Matthew Isaacs takes the hill for the boys in red and we throw the ball around a little and the Rangers take a 2-1 lead.

We can't cross the plate in the 2nd and the Rangers can't either. In the third, Matthew Newton slips across the plate when Rocky walks but the Rangers add another and at the end of 3 we're down 2-3.

In the 4th, Diablos put 5 on the board when Ranger pitchers give up 4 walks and hit two of our batters and we have a 7-3 lead. Jesse is on the hill by now, and though one runner scores, he puts up 3 'K's and the Diablos win their season opener 7-4.

OK now- let's not get too excited. Our guys only hit the ball twice; one a weak dribbler to first and Nicks base hit to the left side. Don't know if it's because we can't hit or they could not throw strikes. The difference was on the mound. Matthew and Jesse walked only 5 and struck out 10 while their guys walked 9 and hit 2. 6 of our 7 runs came that way.

Our boys have a lot to learn in baserunning, fielding; all the facets of the game. But, they are learning and we can expect a lot of improvement so that they can have a successful season.
