| | This was a good one. Both teams had a sub that |
| | had not yet played, therefore each had to |
| | establish handicap. In that situation the team |
| | that shoots the lower scratch score almost always |
| | wins. This time 3 Old Guys (Fish, Ruchti) shot 31 |
| | to Irish, 'Stache, & the Chef's (Leary, Furhman) |
| | 39 and lost! How could that happen? This is a |
| | lesson in one of the fine points of match play. |
| | Irish et al ended up with a handicap of 7, while |
| | 3 Old Guys established at scratch and had to give |
| | 7 strokes. Although 3 Old's gross score was 8 |
| | shots lower, they were not able to win any of the |
| | holes when they gave a stroke (they lost 3 of |
| | them), but won the 2 holes that were played even. |
| | Their problem was that they won those 2 holes by |
| | a total of 5 strokes (3 to 5 on hole #3, 2 to 5 |
| | on hole #8). In both instances, all they had to |
| | do was 2-putt for a 3. What cost 3 Old Guys the |
| | match was not the giving of 7 strokes; rather it |
| | was not conceding a 4 on those two holes. Had |
| | they done so, Irish et al would have shot 37 for |
| | a handicap of 5 and 3 Old Guys would have won the |
| | match. Concession has nothing to do with |
| | politeness and everything to do with strategy, |
| | which is why you always need to know the status |
